An analysis of the Biological Diversity Act 2002 on Biodiversity Day 2022.

It was this day Grassroute was waiting since its inception. The Biodiversity Workshop has been successfully done. The session was brief and informative. It gave a ray of light on BDA and how it designed to protect our biodiversity. But the general feeling was that, neither the Biodiversity Act 2002 nor the Annual Biodiversity Day protect our biodiversity; each one of us keep our vigil to save it.

The inaugural session of the Biodiversity Day Workshop started a little bit late at 3:15 PM. Even though it was the vacation time for educational institutions and the climate was cloudy and rainy, the hall was almost filled with enough participants. Mr K.K. Reghuraj, Mentor of Grassroute, presided over the inaugural session. Mrs Subodha Shaji, Vypeen Block Development Committee Chairperson inaugurated the workshop.

The main session – Practicality of BDA

BDA alone can’t save our Biodiversity, but people and LSG authorities and BMC members should join hands together to make it protected, says Mrs Sreeja K.S., Dist. Co-ordinator, State Biodiversity Board, leading the main session with “Challenges facing our biodiversity and ways to overcome it in the light of the Biological Diversity Act 2002”. With many working examples, she demonstrated to the students how to create, edit and maintain the People’s Biodiversity Register (PBA).

About 31 students from various colleges around the city attended the workshop. LSG officials and other dignitaries from various government departments were also present at the programme.

Supporting session – How to protect our groves with BDA

“To ensure the healthy living of our next generation, we should keep our environment uncontaminated. We had lots of groves (Kavu’s) until the recent past. As a result of the blind development model, most of them are no more. The fact is that the biodiversity of Kerala is more significant than the Amazon rainforests.” Says Mr P.K. Ramachandran, former District Co-ordinator, KSBB.

The workshop was supported by Nayarabmbalam Grama Panchayath and Nayarambalam Service Co-operative Bank. Mr E.K. Jayan Vypeen Block Welfare Standing Committee Chairperson, Mrs Sreedevi K. Namboothiri, Block Development Officer, and Mrs Susamma, Assistant Director of Agriculture rendered felicitation speeches.

The workshop was a small step to have a better understanding of our valuable biodiversity. The scholarly community can do a lot of things on that. With the participation of such a community, including university students, we hope that we can protect our biodiversity with BDA 2002.
