Activities Mangrove Planting

The planting continues. Our second project finished.

We take great pride in the successful execution of this project, which was made possible by the dedication and hard work of all participants. Let us continue to champion the cause of environmental conservation and inspire others to join us in nurturing and protecting our precious coastal ecosystems. Together, we can make a significant and lasting impact.

Grassroute’s commitment to seashore planting continues with another successful endeavour. Once again, we replicated our previous activity, this time near Puthankadappuram Beach, Nayarambalam, on 12th September 2021. The project involved the planting of 700 stumps of Coast Cottonwood Trees (Hibiscus tiliaceus), 560 Indian Almond seeds (Terminalia catappa), 100 seeds of Solitary Fishtail Palm (Caryota urens), as well as 100 seeds and 100 saplings of Mangrove(Rhizophora mucronata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza).

In preparation for the event, we disseminated an informative poster through social media a week prior, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. We were thrilled to have 23 enthusiastic participants contributing to the project’s success.

The significance of maintaining a healthy mangrove ecosystem at coastal regions cannot be overstated. Mangroves serve as a vital buffer between land and sea, offering protection against coastal erosion, storm surges, and tidal waves. Their intricate root systems trap sediments, stabilizing shorelines and preventing land loss. Furthermore, mangroves provide crucial habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, including fish, birds, and marine invertebrates, supporting the overall biodiversity of the area.

Beyond their ecological importance, mangroves also contribute to carbon sequestration, helping mitigate climate change. These remarkable trees absorb and store significant amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide, playing a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating global warming.

By undertaking initiatives like our recent planting project, we actively contribute to the preservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems. Through collective efforts, we can safeguard these invaluable coastal habitats, ensuring their longevity for future generations to enjoy.
