Grassroute is proud to share our ongoing efforts in creating a greener future for Puthankadappuram Beach! Back in September 2021, we took a vital step by planting 700 Coast Cottonwood (Hibiscus tiliaceus) stumps at the sand wall facing the Beach road.1
Three years later, the results are truly inspiring! While some sea-facing plants didn’t survive, those facing the beach road have flourished, and they are growing significantly. This success motivated us to plant even more!
On June 17th, 2024, we embarked on the first phase of a new planting session, adding over 300 stumps facing the Arabian Sea. With the monsoon season just begun, we’re hopeful that all the stumps will grow rapidly in the coming days.
This is just the beginning! We have more planting sessions planned throughout the monsoon, and we’d love for dedicated volunteers to join us. Remarkably, just 6 volunteers were able to plant all the recent stumps in just a couple of hours – with your help, we can achieve even more!
The Power of Nature’s Solution
The Coast Cottonwood boasts a robust root system, significantly strengthening the sand wall compared to traditional rock structures. This dense bio-fencing effectively mitigates the impact of waves, promoting a more sustainable and resilient environment.
Furthermore, as a mangrove associate, the Coast Cottonwood plays a vital role in the ecosystem’s long-term health. Upon reaching maturity, these trees provide cooling shade and nourishing mulch, fostering the growth of true mangroves. This creates a flourishing habitat for various true mangrove plants and animal species.
