Celebrating International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem

On the 26th of July, the world united to observe the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, an enlightening event that took place at SDPY KPM High School in Edavanakkad. Organized by the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), the programme aimed to create awareness and foster action to protect mangroves. Together with MSSRF, Grassroute members joined hands to make this day momentous for environmental preservation.

The event commenced with a warm welcome by Sri. P.G. Anilkumar, a dedicated teacher from SDPY KPMHS, Edavanakkad, setting the stage for an inspiring day ahead. Smt. Ratnakala, the HM of SDPY KPMHS, Edavanakkad, delivered a captivating keynote address, emphasizing the significance of protecting our precious mangrove ecosystems.

The programme was skillfully moderated by Prajeesh Parameswaran, a senior scientist from the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, guiding the audience through an array of enlightening discussions.

Sri. I. B. Manoj Kumar, a distinguished Vanamitra award winner from Cochin, shed light on the significance of mangrove afforestation efforts.

Dr M. G. Sanil Kumar, the Head of the Research Department of Botany at SNM College, Maliankara, delved into the diverse mangrove varieties found along the Kerala coast.

Sri. Thomas M. Vazhappilly, Secretary of Grassroute, Nayarambalam, passionately addressed the vital mangrove conservation activities carried out by the organization.

Sri. M. P. Shajan, an esteemed environmentalist and coordinator from the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (Ernakulam), eloquently discussed the necessity of instilling environmental awareness in students.

Following the enriching sessions, the eager students actively interacted with the esteemed panellists, seeking clarifications and gaining deeper insights into the fascinating world of mangrove conservation.
